Top 10 Most Spoken Languages in the World

on Sunday 15 March 2009

I am responding to the letter "Malay among top four spoken languages". I doubt our minister has conveyed the right information to the Rakyat (citizen).

A hasty search over the net for the top spoken languages in the world proven that the information given is actually an unreliable one.

These are the top 10 most spoken languages perhaps.

1st - Mandarin

*Number of speakers: 1 billion+

Area covered : China, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, and Thailand.

2nd - English

*Number of speakers: 508 million

Area covered : Australia, Brunei, Cameroon, Canada, Fiji, New Zealand, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, U.K., and U.S., not to mention many Caribbean states.

3rd - Hindustani(
Hindi and Urdu)

*Number of speakers: 497 million

Area covered : India and Pakistan.

4th - Spanish

*Number of speakers: 392 million

Area covered : Andorra, Belize, Colombia, Cuba, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Spain, U.S., and Venezuela, Spanish weighs in at numero cuatro .

5th - Russian

*Number of speakers: 277 million

Area covered : Russia

6th - Arabic

*Number of speakers: 246 million

Area covered : Most of the Arabic countries in Middle East. From Iraq to Morocco.

7th - Bengali

*Number of speakers: 211 million

Area covered : Bangladesh and Singapore.

8th - Portuguese

*Number of speakers: 191 million

Area covered : Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, France, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé, Prìncipe, and Portugal, of course.

9th - Malay-Indonesian

*Number of speakers: 159 million

Area covered : Malaysia and Indonesia.

10th - French

*Number of speakers: 129 million

Area covered : France, Africa, North America as well as in parts of Asia and South America.

*Number of speakers are approximate figures, it might varies from time to time.

zzz... dun take me wrong... i didnt say chinese wont get ahead of english... i am juz saying English should, more appropriately, be rated as spoken worldwide. At least for the time being and a few decades to come.

Sorry but you really need to check your numbers only in europe you have 80 millions people who speak french and in 2007 the official number said 200 millions and 400 millions who are able to speak in french so it's 600 millions. If you don't beleive me look at that and these numbers are from 2006...

i think you have misunderstood the figures above.. the numbers which i provided is only applicable for native speakers... while yours table has included the secondary speakers.. that's why your total figures almost overshoot the world population..
